Hormone Abnormalities with Opiates the Chicken or the Egg?

Can hormone replacement lead to longer periods of abstinence? Opiate use affects multiple endocrine systems, and is associated with hypogonadism, (you got no Nads man) adrenal dysfunction, bone loss, and Growth Hormone abnormalities. Central hypogonadism can result from stimulation of the hypothalmus which results in diminished gonadotropin releasing hormone (GRH) leading to decreased Testosterone levels.

Decreased Testosterone can have profound effects on an individual and may include;

  • fatigue
  • poor exercise tolerance
  • increased fat deposition
  • decreased muscle mass
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • poor stress response
  • loss of libido
  • irritability
  • and an overall lack of well being

Some studies have shown a tolerance to this depressive phenomenon, while other studies have shown  clear subjective and objective benefits with hormone treatment.

Heroin studies have shown abnormalities in blood sugar metabolism by multiple mechanisms.  Increased fasting insulin levels coupled with slow insulin response can cause higher blood sugar levels.  High insulin and blood sugar levels after a standard meal can cause;

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Poor Memory and Concentration
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Electrolyte Abnormalities

Careful diet, exercise and nutritional support in the post Detox period is absolutely essential for a safe and sustained recovery. Regardless of your Detox method a thorough evaluation with thoughtful follow-up by your Doctor is mandatory to a safe and sustained recovery.

The Human Growth Hormone (HGH) axis has been shown to be disrupted in Opiate abusing patients.  HGH is the “mother of all hormones” for some people especially the Hollywood crowd and athletes of all kinds.  As I have said many times the only problem with substances of abuse is they work.  Unfortunately, they have side effects that make them extremely unreliable for daily use. Having said that HGH is quite beneficial in the post recovery period. HGH can stabilize mood, boost the immune system, help depression, support joints, improve memory, and optimize body composition. All reasonable goals certainly, but the real disadvantage is the very high cost. A 90 day regimen can cost as much as $3,000.00.  Ouch, for those of us on a budget, but it does work and should be tested and at least discussed with your Doctor.
